Until a few years ago, Melbourne and Sydney were the Aussie cities that hosted our world notable bars and harnessed the skills of some of this country's finest cocktail maestro’s. Really though, it was only a matter of time before the kettle boiled over so to speak and some seriously talented people started to set up shop elsewhere to address the demand for damn fine booze offerings in our other major cities.

Brisbane has been quietly growing in acclaim for a while now and here at Spirit People, we LOVE to get up north and check out the latest happenings. This time around we're especially excited to jump behind the bar at Jerome Batten’s Maker.

Maker is one of those sublimely considered places that oozes architectural suave and masculine cool. And it’s not just the impressive design that stands out and makes its mark. The tiny 18-seater is akin to some of the bars we are more familiar with in Europe and definitely set a number of new benchmarks when it opened in South Brisbane a few years ago. The use of natural materials (dark moody timbers) incorporated in a dark palette that firmly anchors this tiny space into its urban surrounds are nothing if not impressive, but its the epic copper bar slowly oxidising along its 7.5m length that strikes you the minute you walk in and draws you up to its length. The richness and earthy tone hint at the homage this place pays to natural - both materials and produce -  and invite a leisurely evening spent slowly eating and drinking your way through the hours.

We’ll be jumping behind the copper beast on Sunday 5th August to do what we do best - talk spirits, mix up some seasonal cocktails and stir up a whole bunch of fun.

Join our very own Ewen Davies and the Maker team this Sunday 5th August from 5 pm until close.
