The Bloodtub, so named for the small barrel it is served in at this year's Winter Feast, is the Rob Roy inspired cocktail offering from the ever-inspiring Sullivans Cove Distillery at Dark Mofo this year.
The Winter Feast, like the rest of the Dark Mofo program, is a celebration of the winter solstice with a focus on food and drink. And what better connotation to winter food is there than stone fruits. The Bloodtub starts with these and heralds the sweet fruity notes in Sullivans Cove’s Double Cask Single Malt Whisky and the ever delicious Säntis Single Malt Apricot Liqueur. Dolin Dry Vermouth and Mister Bitters Honeyed Apricot complete the essential ingredients with Hickory Smoke adding that wintery element that transports you to a blazing campfire and injects the essence of nostalgia and dose of warming comfort.
Aside from the wonderful marriage of ingredients, this cocktail was conceived especially for the Winter Feast with one other important element in mind - time. The cocktail was prepared and then left to mature for a month in a 20l barrel (the bloodtub) made from a combination of American and Fench Oak which adds a whole new layer of spice and complexity to the drink.
If you would like to make this at home - minus the elevated layer of complexity added by the maturing process - here’s how;
Combine in a mixing glass;
50ml Sullivans Cove Double Cask Single Malt Whisky
20ml Dolin Dry Vermouth
6-7 drops Mister Bitters Honeyed Apricot and Smoked Hickory
Stir and serve on ice and garnish with a brandy-soaked apricot slice.
