SHAKE IT 'TIL U MAKE IT
HORSIN' AROUND WITH HARD-WORKING ATHLETES IN HOBART
We’re back at the party! This Friday at Moonah’s excellent cafe -oaster Shake A Leg Jr, we have a sweet-as list of drinks to keep the winter blues and electoral news at bay - at least for a moment.
This is also going to be our last event for over a month, and Events With Audrey is going to make sure it damn-well looks the part.
GIGI LA TROTTOLA
This Saturday May 11th from 3-7pm. Saddle up and get along to celebrate Australia’s strongest woman and her motto: “Be the draft horse”
We’ve prepared a hella tasty selection of equine-themed seasonal drinks for you to load up on while checking out the gym, checking out the gym members, and to loosen your joints before riding the mechanical bull - and if that’s not a gym you want to join I don’t know what is.
The Cappellano Barolo Chinato is sublimely aromatic and refreshing, and at 18% abv it’s easy to enjoy a good couple of quaffs. I prefer a large serve over ice as a strong aperitif or a gentle digestive.
However Giorgio recently challenged me to make a mixed drink with it, so I came up with this for the popup at Monks & Co and I’m delighted to add this to my repertoire as it’s about to go onto high rotation.
LAVE & A HAIRCUT AT MONKS & CO
Named like a 90s hip-hop song, “Generous” is the combination of Argalà Genepy Gin with apricot that I’ve been fiddling with for the past three years. Often simplest is best, and the dry Australian Style negroni served as inspiration. Marionette’s excellent and slightly tannic Apricot Brandy Liqueur provides the perfect structural foil for the ethereal genepy and bright apricot aromatics, while the earthy Bio Bitter all but disappears beneath the others while anchoring the drink and providing just a lick of bitterness.
Kicking off our new era we have a bunch of events this weekend. Street Eats Franko runs per usual this Friday night with a cracking coiffure-themed menu. Why? Well, because the following day I’m popping up next to a live jazz band behind one of Events With Audrey’s mobile bars inside venerable city barber Monks & Co. The event? Mid-Town Street Party.
EVENTS WITH AUDREY
I’d like to say a huge thank you to those of you who have ever stopped by to read, talk or taste any of the spirits we introduced to the Australian market for the first time:
MEXIPIÑADA - A PARISIAN TROPICAL DREAM
Like her namesake, Audrey is daring, clever, beautiful, timeless and full of charm and witticism. Unlike her namesake, this Audrey is an elegant caravan bar for hire throughout Tasmania.
Audrey was conceived by the entrepreneurial brilliance of Lily Kirkland. Everyone, meet Lily, Lily meet everyone. Now lets find out a little more about Audrey.
“So off I set, and by the time I was completely agreeing with Arthur’s summary and while still chatting with Thomas, he served me up the Mexipiñada as a parting shot. How good is this? I thought. “The drink has to look good,” he said.
“Not only that, this is one of the tastiest, simple drinks that I ever had in that city.”
LAWRENNY ESTATE || 1818 SETTLERS GIN
Aptly named Spring Sprung, this margarita twist takes the uniqueness of the Charles Oates Apple Spirit in all its dry, crunchy and crisp glory and uses it as a placeholder for what would normally be tequila. The result will knock your socks off.
WHO IS KATIE HEPPER?
With a trio of Lawrenny Estate products hitting our shop over the past few weeks we are concluding this shout out with a favourite. The 1818 Settlers Gin rounds out the Lawrenny trifecta with a distillery strength tribute to Tasmania’s early setters.
LAWRENNY ESTATE || SAINT CLAIR VODKA
We sat down with Katie Hepper, of The Understory, to talk about the poetic resonance of her graphic and illustrative work and her ability to take natures tiny, often overlooked details and elevate them to works on paper that are unique, humble and beautifully inspired.
LAWRENNY ESTATE || VAN DIEMEN'S GIN
Saint Clair Vodka from Lawrenny Estate is a welcome change after a lengthy period of cocktail trends all but masking the taste of the spirits they contained. This is one highly aromatic and proudly Tasmanian spirit and we are thrilled to include it in our portfolio.
THE DEN COCKTAIL No. 4 || COSMIC EGGNOG
Lawrenny Distillery manage to capture the essence of Tasmania bottled it within their portfolio of spirits. Their Van Diemen’s Gin embraces Tasmania's pristine purity and highlights the natural freshness of this inspiring land.
THE DEN COCKTAIL No. 3 || MAGIC PILL
And here we come to the fourth and final chapter of our The Den x Spirit People cocktail series with a cracker of a drink - the Cosmic Eggnog!
MARIONETTE APRICOT BRANDY LIQUEUR
Introducing the 3rd chapter in our series of cocktails served during our residency at The Den during this years Dark Mofo winter festival. What can we say about this drink? It's genre-bending, palate-defying, unusual, sexy, invigorating and yet still downright classy.
THE DEN COCKTAIL No. 2 || THE HILLS HAVE IRES
Since the release of their inaugural cocktail staples - a sweet, smooth but oh so dry cassis and a stunningly complex yet versatile orange curaçao - the next addition to the burgeoning Marionette portfolio of liqueurs has been much anticipated. We are thrilled to announce that they have now released the perfect addition, an apricot brandy.
LAWRENNY ESTATE DISTILLERY
Here we bring you the second chapter in the ode to our residency at The Den during Dark Mofo this year. By popular demand, we bring you the extrapolated version of what was our best seller over three mad weeks - The Hills Have Ires.
THE DEN COCKTAIL No. 1 || MASTER & MARGARITA
Nestled between verdant fields, on the banks of the Derwent River in Tasmania's Central Highlands you will find a regal estate. Picturesque and surrounded by lush greenery, Lawrenny Estate exudes a charm that is wholly defined by its environment and history.
THE END OF A GIN ERA
The MASTER & MARGARITA is a very simple twist on a classic formula that anyone can make at home. It was also one of our most aromatic cocktails during an unforgettable three-week popup at The Den during Dark Mofo 2018.
Friends, it's with some sadness that we announce that we have received our final-ever allocation of The Retiring Gin.
